Mossi, Miguel Ángel (1819-1895)

Vida

Miguel Ángel Mossi fue sacerdote, filólogo, políglota, defensor de la universalidad del lenguaje y del ascendiente semítico sobre la lengua quechua, tesis que despertó opiniones muy encontradas en su época.
Nació en 1819 en Cambiano, pequeña localidad del Piamonte italiano muy cercana a Turín, en el seno de una familia modestamente acomodada y cuyo padre había luchado a las órdenes de Napoleón (1769-1821) durante largos años. Se formó en un seminario de su región e ingresó en la Congregación para la Evangelización de los Pueblos, más conocida como Popaganda Fide; allí cambió su nombre por el de Honorio Mossi de Cambiano (por este motivo no es raro encontrar este nombre, en lugar del de bautismo, en la cabecera de alguna de sus obras, especialmente en las impresas en Bolivia), y cuando, en 1870, se secularizó recuperó su nombre original. En 1843 se había ordenado sacerdote, fecha en la que viajó a América. Pasó largos años como misionero en el Chaco boliviano, territorio que, tras la marcha de los españoles, había abandonado el catolicismo de forma mayoritaria; en esa región se familiarizó con más de 40 dialectos de lenguas amerindias. En 1864 fue a España, donde ingresó en la Academia de la lengua universal, y a Italia con la intención de recopilar bibliografía sobre lingüística misionera anterior para redactar sus obras filológicas. En 1870, ya de vuelta en América, vivió primero en Buenos Aires y después en Santiago del Estero, donde ostentó la cátedra de Latín y Literatura española en la Universidad Nacional de esa ciudad y luchó –sin éxito– desde el ámbito académico por la restitución de las cátedras de Quechua, existentes durante la mayor parte del periodo virreinal hasta la Real Cédula de 1770, promulgada por Carlos III (1716-1788). Fue capellán del Colegio de las Esclavas de Santiago del Estero y párroco en una localidad rural de esa misma provincia. En 1888 se trasladó a la localidad de Atamisqui, también en Santiago del Estero, donde –para su sorpresa– encontró una isla idiomática quechua, lengua traída por los misioneros desde Perú. Como consecuencia de esta vivencia compuso su Manual del idioma general del Perú, publicado póstumamente. Deteriorada su salud, volvió a Santiago del Estero, donde murió en 1895.
La mayor parte de sus obras, a excepción del mencionado Manual, fueron compuestas a raíz de su estancia en el Chaco boliviano y antes de su viaje a Europa. Además de la mencionada obra sobre el quechua, Mossi compuso en sus últimos años varios tratados filosóficos y sobre la universalidad del idioma, muchos de ellos hoy perdidos.

The BVFE regurlaly publishes new bibliographical recordsLatest bibliographical records. Our team is constantly searching for new entries. We choose our content meticulously and verify our links regularly.

Several times a month

We add new content several times a month. We gradually add more content to existing entries, and likewise add more categories and subcategories as future needs require reclassification.

Printing the works

The BVFE does not own the intellectual property rights to the entries, it only selects, organizes and indicates the sites where they are located. As such, it is impossible to print the copies from the BVFE. You must agree to the legal conditions of the websites that contain the copies.

Extensions

We are currently devising several extensions for the website. We will gradually integrate upgrades and more functions. The BVFE welcomes any suggestions that our users may have.

Submission of new URLs
