Palafox y Mendoza, Juan de (1600-1659)

Juan de Palafox y Mendoza, hijo ilegítimo de Jaime de Palafox y Rebolledo (1560-1625), segundo marqués de Ariza, nació en Fitero (Navarra) en 1600. Fue reconocido por su padre a los 10 años, por lo que pudo formarse en las universidades de Alcalá y Salamanca. Hacia 1626 comenzó su escalada en el gobierno civil y eclesiástico: fue nombrado fiscal del Consejo de Guerra y, tres años más tarde, del Consejo de Indias. Ocupó el puesto tesorero de la Santa Iglesia de Tarazona. Fue visitador del Convento de las Descalzas Reales (Madrid), así como capellán de María Ana de Austria (1606-1646). En 1639 embarcó hacia Nueva España como visitador general y obispo de Puebla de los Ángeles (México), llegando a desempeñar los cargos de virrey de Nueva España (1642) y arzobispo de México. A pesar de su labor de dedicación y protección del pueblo indígena, sus constantes desavenencias con los jesuitas y otros detractores lo obligaron a regresar a España en 1649, donde pasó sus últimos años como presidente del Consejo de Aragón y obispo de la diócesis Osma. Falleció en 1659 en El Burgo de Osma (Soria).

La obra de Juan de Palafox y Mendoza abarca distintas materias: política –civil y eclesiástica–, historia, teología y poesía. Su única aportación a la filología española fue el Breve tratado de escrivir bien, y de la perfecta ortographía, unos sucintos apuntes con los que pretendía mejorar la caligrafía y ortografía de los documentos católicos, abogando por la claridad, la limpieza y la corrección. A pesar de que no fue redactado para ser impreso, sino para servir de guía a los escribientes al servicio del pontificado, el Breve tratado de escrivir bien fue editado póstumamente: en 1662 (María de Quiñones, Madrid), en 1679 (herederos de Diego Dormer, Zaragoza) y en 1704 (Antonio de Torrubia, Granada). Se imprimió nuevamente en el décimo tomo de los quince que conformaron las Obras del ilustríssimo, excelentíssimo, y venerable siervo de Dios don Juan de Palafox y Mendoza (Gabriel Ramírez, Madrid, 1762) y junto con la obra de Juan de Lama (¿?-1725-¿?): Breve tratado de escribir bien y de la perfecta ortografía. Perla de las dos lenguas. Alma y Norte seguro de su pronunciación. El acento de lo latino y castellano con lo más común y esencial de la ortografía moderna, para saberlo hablar, escribir, leer, pronunciar y acentuar con toda propiedad y elegancia, todo género de personas domésticas y extrañas (s. n., Madrid, 1725).

The BVFE regurlaly publishes new bibliographical recordsLatest bibliographical records. Our team is constantly searching for new entries. We choose our content meticulously and verify our links regularly.

Several times a month

We add new content several times a month. We gradually add more content to existing entries, and likewise add more categories and subcategories as future needs require reclassification.

Printing bibliographical records

Printing the works

The BVFE does not own the intellectual property rights to the entries, it only selects, organizes and indicates the sites where they are located. As such, it is impossible to print the copies from the BVFE. You must agree to the legal conditions of the websites that contain the copies.

Extensions

We are currently devising several extensions for the website. We will gradually integrate upgrades and more functions. The BVFE welcomes any suggestions that our users may have.

Submission of new URLs

Clicking on the + sign located on the dropdown tab at the top of the website Refer a URL or make a suggestion will take you to a form that has a field where you can send a URL address that has not yet been included in the BVFE. It is simple to use: just indicate the URL of the entry and we will do the rest, after completing the corresponding checks.
