Salkeld, Joseph (¿?-1850)

Vida

No conservamos datos acerca de Joseph Salkeld, quien vivió parte de su vida en Estados Unidos, como podemos deducir de sus publicaciones realizadas por varias imprentas de Nueva York. Salkeld falleció en el año 1850, y parte de su obra fue reimpresa de forma póstuma. Debido a la naturaleza diversa de sus publicaciones, no podemos asegurar su formación en alguna especialidad concreta, aunque sí parece que Salked estuvo interesado en la teología, la mitología religiosa y clásica, y la enseñanza del español en el ámbito estadounidense.

Han pasado a la historia tres obras de Joseph Salked, una fue The evergreen, or Church-offering for all seasons; a repository of religious, literary, and entertaining knowledge for the cristian family (Salkeld, Hitchcock & Stafford, New Haven), obra editada en diez volúmenes, de cuyos cuatro primeros se ocupó Salked y que fueron publicados en años consecutivos entre 1844 y 1847. También del año de 1844 data su Classical Antiquities, or A compendium of roman and grecian antiquities; with a sketch of ancient mythology (Alexander V. Blake, Nueva York) que fue reimpresa en los años de 1855 y de 1865. La última obra de Salked que conocemos fue publicada también en Nueva York cuatro años después bajo el título de A first book in Spanish, or A practical introduction to the study of the Spanish language. El volumen de enseñanza del español contenía unas nociones de ortografía y de pronunciación que abarcaban unas diez páginas y se completaba con un vocabulario, de más de cuarenta páginas, que reflejaba el léxico expresado en las lecturas del manual. La obra, basada en el método de enseñanza de lenguas de Heinrich G. Ollendorff (1803-1865), centrado en la imitación y repetición constantes, se reimprimió en 1859, 1860 y 1865 por la misma imprenta de Harper and Brothers en Nueva York y, en la actualidad, se dispone de una edición digitalizada en 2016 por BiblioLife, editorial que digitaliza volúmenes antiguos, afincada en Charleston, Carolina del Sur.

  • A first book in Spanish, or A practical introduction to the study of the Spanish language: containing full instructions in pronunciation, a grammar; exercises on the Ollendorff method of constant imitation and repetition; reading lessons; and a vocabulary, Harper and Brothers Publishers, Nueva York, 1848.

The BVFE regurlaly publishes new bibliographical recordsLatest bibliographical records. Our team is constantly searching for new entries. We choose our content meticulously and verify our links regularly.

Several times a month

We add new content several times a month. We gradually add more content to existing entries, and likewise add more categories and subcategories as future needs require reclassification.

You can send any BVFE entry to a friend, partner, researcher or any person interested in history of the Spanish language. To do so, press the button "Recommend" found under each file and send the entry to an email address.

Printing bibliographical records

All of the bibliographical recordsImprimir registro de la Biblioteca Virtual de la Filología Española that are in the BVFE can be printed. Click on the "Print" button located below each record. A new window will open with the content of the file ready for printing.

Printing the works

The BVFE does not own the intellectual property rights to the entries, it only selects, organizes and indicates the sites where they are located. As such, it is impossible to print the copies from the BVFE. You must agree to the legal conditions of the websites that contain the copies.

Extensions

We are currently devising several extensions for the website. We will gradually integrate upgrades and more functions. The BVFE welcomes any suggestions that our users may have.

Submission of new URLs

Clicking on the + sign located on the dropdown tab at the top of the website Refer a URL or make a suggestion will take you to a form that has a field where you can send a URL address that has not yet been included in the BVFE. It is simple to use: just indicate the URL of the entry and we will do the rest, after completing the corresponding checks.
