No se conservan muchos datos acerca de la vida del docente de español y lexicógrafo Domingo Gian Trapani, de origen presumiblemente italiano, que vivió durante el siglo XIX. Gracias a la información contenida en sus publicaciones, podemos saber que fue cónsul de España en Argel en torno al año de 1830; así lo relata en la obra sobre la historia, la moral y la política de Argel, Alger tel qu'il est: ou Tableau statistique, moral et politique de cette régence (L. Fayolle, París, 1830).
La primera de las publicaciones de Domingo Gian Trapani dedicada a la lengua española fue una obra editada en coautoría con A. de Rosily (¿?-1826-¿?) y Charles Nodier (1780-1844), el Nuevo diccionario español francés y francés-español (1826). La parte francés-español, que contiene menos entradas y de la que se encargó Rosily, es fiel al repertorio del diccionario de Manuel Melchor Núñez de Taboada (1775-¿1837?), Dictionnaire français-español et espagnol-français plus complet et plus correct que tous ceux qui ont été publiés jusqu'à ce jour y compris celui de Capmany (Brunot-Labbé, París, 1812), que aparece mencionado en la portada. La segunda parte español-francés, que alcanza casi el doble de entradas, se atribuye a Domingo Gian Trapani, quien basaría su contenido en el diccionario de Claude-Marie Gattel (1743-1812), Nouveau dictionnaire espagnol et françois, françois et espagnol avec l'interprétation latine de chaque mot (Bruyset frères, Lyon, 1790), y su estructura en el diccionario de Núñez de Taboada.
De 1838 data un nuevo diccionario, esta vez de carácter portátil o de faltriquera, formato conocido y popularizado desde finales del siglo XVII. El Dictionnaire français-espagnol et espagnol-français. Composé sur le dictionnaire de l'Académie et les meilleurs dictionnaires français et espagnols, que se adaptó a los nuevos cambios ortográficos introducidos en el español por la Real Academia de Española, es deudor del Nouveau dictionnaire espagnol-français et français-espagnol (Librairie Chez Théophile Barrois fils, París, 1820) de G. Hamonière (1789-18¿?), al que prácticamente imita, con escasas adiciones. La obra, destinada a los jóvenes, se popularizó notablemente y se reimprimió en al menos diez ocasiones entre 1843 y 1882, sin cambios sustanciales con respecto a la primera edición de 1838.

The browser
Performing a search in the BVFE is very simple. Either write the word or string of words in our browser, search for a specific category, or perform an alphabetical search by choosing a letter.
Advanced filters
In addition, all of our records contain several fields. To search for a specific work by date of publication, filter by copy, printer, place of printing, etc., use the Advanced Search.

New bibliographical records
The BVFE regurlaly publishes new bibliographical records. Our team is constantly searching for new entries. We choose our content meticulously and verify our links regularly.
Several times a month
We add new content several times a month. We gradually add more content to existing entries, and likewise add more categories and subcategories as future needs require reclassification.

Sharing options
You can send any BVFE entry to a friend, partner, researcher or any person interested in history of the Spanish language. To do so, press the button "Recommend" found under each file and send the entry to an email address.

We have also included a sidebar on the left of the screen which can be used to share on social media, select the BVFE as a favourite in your web browser, etc. On tablets and phones the share option will be displayed at the bottom of the screen.

When any category of the BVFE loads, you will see an RSS icon. Clicking on it allows you to join the feed and receive updated information for the category you have subscribed to. If your browser does not allow you to subscribe to an RSS source, you may need to install a plugin. You can also subscribe via RSS to receive updates directly in your email. Printing bibliographical records
All of the bibliographical records that are in the BVFE can be printed. Click on the "Print" button located below each record. A new window will open with the content of the file ready for printing.
Printing the works
The BVFE does not own the intellectual property rights to the entries, it only selects, organizes and indicates the sites where they are located. As such, it is impossible to print the copies from the BVFE. You must agree to the legal conditions of the websites that contain the copies.

Extensions
We are currently devising several extensions for the website. We will gradually integrate upgrades and more functions. The BVFE welcomes any suggestions that our users may have.
Submission of new URLs
Clicking on the + sign located on the dropdown tab at the top of the website will take you to a form that has a field where you can send a URL address that has not yet been included in the BVFE. It is simple to use: just indicate the URL of the entry and we will do the rest, after completing the corresponding checks.
