Vida
Diego Barros Arana fue un político, historiador, educador e intelectual liberal chileno de la segunda mitad del siglo XIX. Nació en 1830 en Santiago de Chile en el seno de una familia acomodada. Sin embargo, a los cuatro años se quedó huérfano de madre, por lo que fueron su padre y su tía quienes se ocuparon de su formación y crianza. Estudió en el Instituto Nacional junto con Manuel Amunátegui Reyes, con quien estableció una buena amistad y ya, desde muy joven, presentó un notable interés por la cultura, la literatura, la historia y las humanidades.
En su oficio como educador, Barros Arana desempeñó numerosos cargos en instituciones educativas: primero fue profesor y director del Instituto Nacional (1863), centro en el que llevó a cabo una reforma educativa que defendía una enseñanza laica. Además, fue el primer secretario de la Universidad de Chile, decano de la Facultad de Filosofía y Humanidades (1871) y Rector de la Universidad de Chile (1893-1897). En los últimos años se desinteresó de la enseñanza, sino que participó, en 1902, en el Congreso General de Enseñanza y creó el Curso de Matronas en el Hospital San Francisco de Borja.
En cuanto a su ideología y como consecuencia de su ideología anticlerical, fue duramente criticado y generó descontento entre las élites conservadoras y católicas. Incluso fue desterrado de Chile durante la presidencia de Manuel Montt (1851-1861), por lo que Barros Arana viajó a diferentes países (Gran Bretaña, España, Francia, Bélgica y Holanda) donde encontró numerosos documentos inéditos sobre la historia nacional chilena. Regresó en 1863 con la subida al poder del partido liberal y pudo volver a ejercer sus cargos académicos y profesionales hasta 1891, año en el que tuvo que esconderse durante el transcurso de la Guerra Civil por su identificación como opositor al gobierno de José Manuel Balmaceda (1891).
En este sentido, sus principios ideológicos le llevaron a participar activamente en la prensa del momento y publica artículos en El país de Valparaíso (1849 y 1857), La Tribuna de Santiago (1849-1850), la Revista de Santiago (1850, 1855 y 1872), la Revista Sud-América (1851 y 1860), El Diario de Valparaíso (1852), El Ferrocarril (1855), los Anales de la Universidad de Chile, la Revista de Ciencias i Letras (1857), etc. Además, fundó dos revistas como El Museo (1853), El Correo del Domingo (1862) y la Revista Chilena (1875) junto con Miguel Luis Amunátegui. Finalmente, ocupó diversos cargos políticos. Fue ministro plenipotenciario y perito en la Comisión de Límites, ejerciendo un rol papel centra en las negociaciones con Argentina durante la década de 1870 por los territorios limítrofes.
Aunque su obra más destacada es Historia General de Chile (1884-1902, 16 vols.) su presencia en la BVFE se debe a la publicación en coautoría con Rodolfo Lenz de “La lingüística americana: su historia i su estado actual” (1893). En este estudio, Barros Arana se ocupa de presentar un panorama general sobre los trabajos publicados de lingüística americana hasta principios del siglo XVIII, mientras que Lenz incide en las cuestiones puramente lingüísticas.

The browser
Performing a search in the BVFE is very simple. Either write the word or string of words in our browser, search for a specific category, or perform an alphabetical search by choosing a letter.
Advanced filters
In addition, all of our records contain several fields. To search for a specific work by date of publication, filter by copy, printer, place of printing, etc., use the Advanced Search.

New bibliographical records
The BVFE regurlaly publishes new bibliographical records. Our team is constantly searching for new entries. We choose our content meticulously and verify our links regularly.
Several times a month
We add new content several times a month. We gradually add more content to existing entries, and likewise add more categories and subcategories as future needs require reclassification.

Sharing options
You can send any BVFE entry to a friend, partner, researcher or any person interested in history of the Spanish language. To do so, press the button "Recommend" found under each file and send the entry to an email address.

We have also included a sidebar on the left of the screen which can be used to share on social media, select the BVFE as a favourite in your web browser, etc. On tablets and phones the share option will be displayed at the bottom of the screen.

Printing bibliographical records
All of the bibliographical records that are in the BVFE can be printed. Click on the "Print" button located below each record. A new window will open with the content of the file ready for printing.
Printing the works
The BVFE does not own the intellectual property rights to the entries, it only selects, organizes and indicates the sites where they are located. As such, it is impossible to print the copies from the BVFE. You must agree to the legal conditions of the websites that contain the copies.

Extensions
We are currently devising several extensions for the website. We will gradually integrate upgrades and more functions. The BVFE welcomes any suggestions that our users may have.
Submission of new URLs
Clicking on the + sign located on the dropdown tab at the top of the website will take you to a form that has a field where you can send a URL address that has not yet been included in the BVFE. It is simple to use: just indicate the URL of the entry and we will do the rest, after completing the corresponding checks.
