Vida
Carlos Soler y Arqués nació en 1836 en Sant Martí de Viladrau. Tras formarse en filosofía y letras en la Universidad de Zaragoza, se dedica profesionalmente a la enseñanza de idiomas, inglés y francés, en institutos de varias zonas de España, hasta que es nombrado en 1888 catedrático del instituto Cardenal Cisneros de Madrid. Es en la capital donde pasa el resto de su vida hasta que muere en 1896. Compagina su labor como docente con la publicación de obras y artículos en prensa de contenido literario, político, histórico y social, entre las que destacan Los Españoles según Calderón y Ideal de la familia o El socialismo y la Iglesia. Esta producción le lleva a ser miembro de academias como la de Historia o la de Ciencias Morales y Políticas. Además, colabora asiduamente en periódicos como El Tiempo, La Revista Contemporánea o El Magisterio Español.
En el terreno lingüístico publica obras relacionadas con su desempeño profesional como profesor de lenguas. En concreto, desde 1866 ven la luz tres obras relacionadas con la enseñanza del francés, el Curso de lengua francesa (1866), las Lecciones de lengua francesa (1884) y el Novísimo Diccionario manual franco-español e hispano-francés (1893). Las obras disponibles en la BVFE muestran sus inquietudes relacionadas con los métodos de enseñanza de lenguas extranjeras, ideas que también reproduce en sus obras Las reformas y la segunda enseñanza. Consideraciones sobre problemas, necesidades y desacierto y La segunda enseñanza y las lenguas vivas, ambas publicadas en 1891.
La primera de ellas, el Curso de lengua francesa, se trata de un manual de francés que reproduce un sistema de enseñanza teórico-práctico siguiendo, según cita en el prólogo de la obra, los métodos Ollendorff, Ahn y Robertson y la teoría gramatical de la Academia y Port-Royale entre otros. Por su parte, Lecciones de lengua francesa, adapta sus contenidos al plan de enseñanza secundaria. En ella se desdice de lo que defiende en su Curso de lengua francesa y critica los métodos de enseñanza que le sirvieron de base en su confección para abogar por una enseñanza de carácter más práctico, siguiendo las recomendaciones de pedagogos como Mariano Cardedera. De esta manera, tal y como anuncia en el prólogo, las lecciones cuentan mayoritariamente con ejercicios prácticos basados en la lengua usual, dado que el objetivo del autor es que sirvan de utilidad en un contexto cotidiano. Esta obra cuenta con un gran éxito, alcanzando las 17 ediciones en 1924.

The browser
Performing a search in the BVFE is very simple. Either write the word or string of words in our browser, search for a specific category, or perform an alphabetical search by choosing a letter.
Advanced filters
In addition, all of our records contain several fields. To search for a specific work by date of publication, filter by copy, printer, place of printing, etc., use the Advanced Search.

New bibliographical records
The BVFE regurlaly publishes new bibliographical records. Our team is constantly searching for new entries. We choose our content meticulously and verify our links regularly.
Several times a month
We add new content several times a month. We gradually add more content to existing entries, and likewise add more categories and subcategories as future needs require reclassification.

Sharing options
You can send any BVFE entry to a friend, partner, researcher or any person interested in history of the Spanish language. To do so, press the button "Recommend" found under each file and send the entry to an email address.

We have also included a sidebar on the left of the screen which can be used to share on social media, select the BVFE as a favourite in your web browser, etc. On tablets and phones the share option will be displayed at the bottom of the screen.

When any category of the BVFE loads, you will see an RSS icon. Clicking on it allows you to join the feed and receive updated information for the category you have subscribed to. If your browser does not allow you to subscribe to an RSS source, you may need to install a plugin. You can also subscribe via RSS to receive updates directly in your email. Printing bibliographical records
All of the bibliographical records that are in the BVFE can be printed. Click on the "Print" button located below each record. A new window will open with the content of the file ready for printing.
Printing the works
The BVFE does not own the intellectual property rights to the entries, it only selects, organizes and indicates the sites where they are located. As such, it is impossible to print the copies from the BVFE. You must agree to the legal conditions of the websites that contain the copies.

Extensions
We are currently devising several extensions for the website. We will gradually integrate upgrades and more functions. The BVFE welcomes any suggestions that our users may have.
Submission of new URLs
Clicking on the + sign located on the dropdown tab at the top of the website will take you to a form that has a field where you can send a URL address that has not yet been included in the BVFE. It is simple to use: just indicate the URL of the entry and we will do the rest, after completing the corresponding checks.
