Brasseur de Bourbourg, Abbé Etienne-Charles (1814-1874)

Brasseur de Bourbourg fue un historiador, sacerdote y americanista francés. Se formó en Filosofía y Teología en Gante (Bélgica) y en Roma (Italia), consiguiendo el sacerdocio en 1845. Desde muy joven, fue un asiduo colaborador en revistas parisinas y publicó textos de carácter histórico con los que adquirió prestigio e influencia. Ese renombre provocó que el vicario general de Quebec le invitase a formar parte del Seminario de Canadá, donde empezó a investigar a partir de 1845 los archivos contenidos de la arquidiócesis.
Posteriormente, ejerció el sacerdocio en Boston, viajó a México en 1847 y regresó a Europa en 1851. Sin embargo, se vio involucrado en una serie de polémicas por su publicación de una controvertida Historia de Canadá. Este hecho quizá fue el que provocó sus continuos viajes a América a partir de 1852: como capellán de la legación francesa en México, como administrador eclesiástico en Guatemala (1857-1859) y como misionero científico para el gobierno francés en México y Centroamérica. En este periodo, Brasseur de Bourbourg se convirtió en un verdadero apasionado por las civilizaciones y lenguas indígenas, la geografía y la etnografía y adquirió mucha fama como erudito americanista. Aunque regresa a Europa en 1860, se incorpora de nuevo en un viaje a México para emprender estudios arqueológicos en Yucatán (1863) y continuar sus investigaciones acerca de las culturas precolombinas. A pesar de que el emperador mexicano Maximiliano quiso comprar su biblioteca y le ofreció el Ministerio de Educación y Dirección de Museos y Biblioteca del país, Brasseur no aceptó y decidió seguir con sus estudios autónomos por distintos países de América Central.
En relación con lo lingüístico, publicó en París una gramática trilingüe quiché-español-francés (1862) que integra un vocabulario comparativo de las raíces en quiche, cakchiquel y tzutuchil junto con las pertinentes correspondencias en español y en francés. Además, su biblioteca, Ex Collectione Americana, estaba integrada por documentos valiosísimos para el conocimiento de algunas lenguas amerindias: una copia del Vocabulario de la lengua española y tzedal de Domingo de Ara, una transcripción de una colección de documentos escritos en cakchiquel que Brasseur comentó y a los que incorporó una portada, o una copia del Vocabulario en lengua tzedal de Alonso de Guzmán, entre otros.

The browser
Performing a search in the BVFE is very simple. Either write the word or string of words in our browser, search for a specific category, or perform an alphabetical search by choosing a letter.
Advanced filters
In addition, all of our records contain several fields. To search for a specific work by date of publication, filter by copy, printer, place of printing, etc., use the Advanced Search.

New bibliographical records
The BVFE regurlaly publishes new bibliographical records. Our team is constantly searching for new entries. We choose our content meticulously and verify our links regularly.
Several times a month
We add new content several times a month. We gradually add more content to existing entries, and likewise add more categories and subcategories as future needs require reclassification.

Sharing options
You can send any BVFE entry to a friend, partner, researcher or any person interested in history of the Spanish language. To do so, press the button "Recommend" found under each file and send the entry to an email address.

We have also included a sidebar on the left of the screen which can be used to share on social media, select the BVFE as a favourite in your web browser, etc. On tablets and phones the share option will be displayed at the bottom of the screen.

When any category of the BVFE loads, you will see an RSS icon. Clicking on it allows you to join the feed and receive updated information for the category you have subscribed to. If your browser does not allow you to subscribe to an RSS source, you may need to install a plugin. You can also subscribe via RSS to receive updates directly in your email. Printing bibliographical records
All of the bibliographical records that are in the BVFE can be printed. Click on the "Print" button located below each record. A new window will open with the content of the file ready for printing.
Printing the works
The BVFE does not own the intellectual property rights to the entries, it only selects, organizes and indicates the sites where they are located. As such, it is impossible to print the copies from the BVFE. You must agree to the legal conditions of the websites that contain the copies.

Extensions
We are currently devising several extensions for the website. We will gradually integrate upgrades and more functions. The BVFE welcomes any suggestions that our users may have.
Submission of new URLs
Clicking on the + sign located on the dropdown tab at the top of the website will take you to a form that has a field where you can send a URL address that has not yet been included in the BVFE. It is simple to use: just indicate the URL of the entry and we will do the rest, after completing the corresponding checks.
