William F. Giese 

Vida

William Frederic Giese fue un profesor y escritor estadounidense que nació el 25 de febrero de 1864, en Winona (Minnesota), y falleció el 3 de marzo de 1943. Pese a que no conservamos apenas más datos acerca de su vida, gracias a sus publicaciones, sabemos que Giese fue profesor asociado de lenguas romances, francés y español, en los inicios del siglo XX en la Universidad de Wisconsin.

La primera obra dedicada al español que conocemos de William F. Giese es una pequeña gramática enfocada a la lectura de textos incluidos en el volumen que publicó como A first Spanish book and reader en 1902. En 1906, Giese editó las Novelas Cortas de Pedro Antonio de Alarcón (1833-1891) en un volumen que incluía notas y un vocabulario final. Años más tarde, Giese sacaría a la luz su última obra dedicada al español de las que han pasado a la posteridad y tenemos constancia, Spanish anecdotes, arranged for translation and conversation (1909). Publicada junto a Charles Dean Cool (1880-1951), profesor asistente de lenguas romance en la University of Wisconsin, la obra cuenta con un total de 162 textos breves que se completan con unas notas explicativas de refranes en español y con un vocabulario final español-inglés. El profesor estadounidense también dedicó parte de sus publicaciones a la lengua francesa, como Simplest spoken French (ca. 1918) o Beginning French (1919) o su Graded French method (1913), publicadas todas ellas por H. Holt and Company (Nueva York). Asimismo, encontramos entre la producción bibliográfica de Giese obras dedicadas a la literatura y a los autores literarios, como Victor Hugo, the man & the poet (L. MacVeagh, The Dial Press, Nueva York, 1926) o Sainte-Beuve, a literary portrait (Madison, 1931); así como volúmenes dedicados a la historia política, entre los que destaca German autocracy and militarism (University of Wisconsin, Madison, 1918).

The browser

Performing a search in the BVFE is very simple. Either write the word or string of words in our browser, search for a specific category, or perform an alphabetical search by choosing a letter.

The BVFE regurlaly publishes new bibliographical recordsLatest bibliographical records. Our team is constantly searching for new entries. We choose our content meticulously and verify our links regularly.

Several times a month

We add new content several times a month. We gradually add more content to existing entries, and likewise add more categories and subcategories as future needs require reclassification.

Sharing options

You can send any BVFE entry to a friend, partner, researcher or any person interested in history of the Spanish language. To do so, press the button "Recommend" found under each file and send the entry to an email address.

Printing bibliographical records

All of the bibliographical recordsImprimir registro de la Biblioteca Virtual de la Filología Española that are in the BVFE can be printed. Click on the "Print" button located below each record. A new window will open with the content of the file ready for printing.

Printing the works

The BVFE does not own the intellectual property rights to the entries, it only selects, organizes and indicates the sites where they are located. As such, it is impossible to print the copies from the BVFE. You must agree to the legal conditions of the websites that contain the copies.

Extensions

We are currently devising several extensions for the website. We will gradually integrate upgrades and more functions. The BVFE welcomes any suggestions that our users may have.

Submission of new URLs

Clicking on the + sign located on the dropdown tab at the top of the website Refer a URL or make a suggestion will take you to a form that has a field where you can send a URL address that has not yet been included in the BVFE. It is simple to use: just indicate the URL of the entry and we will do the rest, after completing the corresponding checks.
